Growing up in the United States male subculture has provided a life of many lessons. Most of these lessons are human lessons, available to both maels and females.
Others are available only within the actual experience of living as a male or female. My perspectives are rooted in masculinity as I have learned and lived it. It’s clear that virtually all of my social behaviors are optional, though often deeply ingrained to the point of feeling automatic.
Emotional shaping of males in the US is an undeniable influence with both positive and negative results. It the influence of the US culture on the emotional growth and development of males that is the focus of this section.
The overall health of our males is good. We are a nation of men who are largely hard working, generous, kind and responsible.
Where our health is most endangered is in the area of emotions and emotional process. It’s within the domain of beliefs and behaviors linked to emotions that males are most challenged if they are truly committed to becoming elders worthy of the respect of society.
